Richard Chowning is Founder and Director of Africa Mentor, an Africa Advisory Consultancy. Africa Mentor’s mission is to help SMEs and entrepreneurs to put their best foot forward in Africa.
Chowning has 40+ years of development, business, education and project management experience in Africa, including 25 years in-residence on the continent. He has first hand knowledge and expertise in navigating Africa’s political, economic, business, cultural and social dynamics. He has served as African agent for automotive, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, hospitality, mining and other companies.
Scores of individuals and teams who he has mentored are presently working, or have worked, in such countries as Kenya, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Benin and Togo. He has taught African Studies, Swahili and Cross-Cultural Communication at several universities in the United States including Abilene Christian University, Johnson University and Mid-Atlantic Christian University. He is fluent in English, Swahili, Kalenjin (Kenya), Ajagbe (Benin).
He has been a featured speaker at several Africa business conferences including Start-Up Africa. Chowning was the founding Chairperson of the Electronic Technology Group of the African Studies Association.
After spending many years in the non-profit sector, Chowning now believes that for-profit businesses are much more sustainable and have proven to contribute greatly to job creation in Africa.
